Obituary

Shirley Louise Grant DePree, of Plainfield, passed away peacefully surrounded by family, on March 20, 2023, after a brief illness. She was 87 years old and is now reunited with departed loved ones and at peace in the presence of Jesus.

She was a 1952 graduate of Lyman High School in Longwood, Florida and a 1981 graduate of Indiana Central College. She worked for Indianapolis Power and Light on Monument Circle for 20 years, retiring in 2000. She was proceeded in death by her parents Russell and Ruth.

Shirley leaves behind a family who will be forever grateful for being fully loved by her beautiful and caring soul. She is survived by two children, Robert DePree of Indianapolis, Debra DePree Holt (Lowell) of Jasper, Indiana; sister Sibyl Coombs (Vernon) Palm Coast, Florida; four grandchildren, Ansley Worland (Anthony), Amanda DePree (Joshua), Grant DePree (Natalie), Alexandra Holt-Leeson (Garrett); eight great-grandchildren, Braylen Jenkins and Baleigh Worland, Eleanor and Henry Smith, Ivy, Cameron, Elijah and Gabriella DePree; nieces and nephews; special family friend Bill Dickey; beloved dog Puppy; and many cherished lifelong friends.

Shirley was the matriarch of her family and enjoyed spending time with all generations. She was a wonderful cook and homemaker and her family always devoured her deviled eggs. She was an avid gardener and participated in the Plainfield Garden Club for many years. She had a love for nature that included birds, flowers, rocks, shells, dried seed pods and pinecones. She was known to stop the car along the road to pick bittersweet vines and collect native wildflowers. She loved traveling and among her favorite places were trips to Nova Scotia, Alaska and Hawaii. She was gifted and talented in needlework and crafts. She enjoyed perusing antique stores, flea markets and garage sales for one-of-a-kind treasures. She loved working crossword puzzles and was the family Scrabble Champ, managing to even spell a few words from her bed in her final days. She was generous and gracious to all and the kind of friend so many were blessed to have.

A Celebration of Life gathering will take place from 1-3 pm on May 7, 2023, at the Plainfield Interurban Depot, 401 South Vine Street, Plainfield. Final burial to be at a later date in Highland Memory Gardens, Apopka, Florida.
