Samuel Wallace Sharer was born in Indianapolis on February 9th, 1958, to Owen and Marian Sharer. He went peacefully to be with the Lord on February 15, 2021. When Sam was 15 months old he became very ill with encephalitis, resulting in severe brain damage. At about age 11, his acute needs eventually required that he leave home to live in a facility for the mentally disabled. Later, Owen and Marian moved with Sam and his two younger sisters to Colorado where Sam was eventually enrolled in Colorado's Host Home program. In this program he received wonderful love and care in a family home setting from specially trained and equipped caregivers, Wydia and later Bonnie. When Owen and Marian went to be with the Lord, his two older siblings were given power of attorney over his care. They deemed it best for Sam to continue in Colorado's Host Home program. Sam's final host home caregiver for the last eight years of his life was Scott, along with his family. All of Sam's host home caregivers not only lovingly and skillfully cared for Sam like he was their own son, but treated us, Sam's family, like their own families. We thank God for them! Sam was not able to speak or care for himself, but he was endearing and had some fun idiosyncrasies, like being able to figure out tunes on the piano by ear, spinning multiple pan lids all at the same time, stomping, and walking backwards. He loved back-rubs, music, the outdoors and walking very fast. He is survived by his four siblings: Lorna Ward (AZ), John Sharer (TN), Jenny Henning (IN) and Amy Logan (IN).
Sam's siblings are having a memorial service for him on Saturday, September 9th, at First Baptist Church of Clayton, 4797 Iowa Street, Clayton, IN, from 1:30 - 3:00.
Hall-Baker Funeral Home is handling arrangements for a private family burial on the 9th at Clayton Cemetery where Sam's parents are buried.
