Robert Fletcher Smock, age 98 of Plainfield, passed away peacefully at the Plainfield Healthcare Center on August 21, 2020. Bob was born on September 15, 1921 on Missionary Ridge in Chattanooga, Tennessee to the late Jessica (Bowie) Smock and Arthur Smock. His parents divorced early in his life, during the depression, he and his sister, Lynn lived on a farm in Kentucky with relatives while his mother worked as a nurse to provide financial support for her children. Mrs. Smock later married Dr. Ivan A. Clark and settled in Paoli, Indiana where Bob was raised. Bob attended Westtown Prep School in West Chester, Pennsylvania and graduated from Paoli High School in 1939. He attended Earlham College before enlisting in the Army Air Corp during WWII. He was stationed at Bergstrom Air Force Base, near Austin, Texas. It was at Earlham College that he met his wife of 67 years, Margaret Ellen “Pommie” Pomeroy. They raised their family in Plainfield, Indiana. He worked for Allison in Speedway and retired after 30 years. Bob was a member of Plainfield Elks Club #2186, was a 32nd degree Mason of the Plainfield Masonic Lodge #653, and initiated into the Scottish Rite in Indianapolis. He was an avid fisherman and sports fan, having played league softball while in the army. Bob is survived by his four children, Lynn Armbruster, Robert A. Smock, Jan Thomas, James B. Smock; his grandchildren, Kristian, Kate, Margy, Anne, Andrew and J Kimberley, and a nephew, Wood. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, stepfather, sister Lynn Puryear, wife Pommie in 2010, and grandson Dayton in 2003. Bob will be interred at Maple Hill Cemetery. At his request, no service will be held. Hall-Baker Funeral Home, Plainfield, is handling the arrangements.
