Larry R. Svendsen, of Plainfield, Indiana, 80, passed away on March 22, 2023, after an extended illness. A lifelong Plainfield resident, Larry graduated from Plainfield High School in 1960. He served in the U.S. Army from 1964-1970, where he was awarded an Expert Rifle Commendation, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. Larry was proud of his military service and especially enjoyed visiting with his daughter Sara's students on Veteran's Day each year. Larry had 31 years of combined service with various Bell companies, including Indiana Bell, AT&T, and the combined Lucent Technologies/Bell Labs.
Larry was an opinionated conversationalist, but he would do anything for his family and his friends and neighbors. He was always ready to help anyone fix anything anywhere anytime. Larry loved sports of all kinds, including Nascar, Indy 500, the Olympics, Football, Basketball, Baseball, and Hockey, and was an outstanding armchair quarterback, referee, or umpire, whatever the sport! Larry's favorite teams were Chicago Bears and Cubs. But watching sports in person or on TV was nothing compared to coaching youth sports, including Plainfield Girls Softball leagues. He also enjoyed helping out while his daughter Sara coached her middle school volleyball teams.
Larry was famous for his love of fireworks of all kinds. From snakes and sparklers to rainbow waterfalls and spinning silver spiral fountains, Larry loved them all. 4th of July was like Christmas to Larry, and his family and friends always enjoyed being part of those celebrations.
Larry is survived by his wife of 46 years Jean; daughter Sara Svendsen (Jason Pearman); brother, Jerry (Janice) Svendsen; sister-in-law Ruth (Bob) Hastings; nieces Emily Muse and Rachel Embree; and many cousins.
Funeral service and burial will be private; a Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later date.
Hall-Baker Funeral Home in Plainfield is handling the arrangements. In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a Youth Sport Organization of your choice.
