Larry Leon Straley, 85, of Plainfield, passed away in his home Saturday, January 8, 2022. He was born December 24, 1936 in Bryant, Indiana, to Steve and Anna May Straley. He leaves behind two daughters, Elizabeth Straley of West Lafayette, Kathy Straley Strickler (Steve) of Bloomington; one grandson, Trevor Strickler; and two cousins, Keith Huey and Becky Fifer. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ron and sister, Janice.
Larry was a proud graduate of Purdue University and closely followed Purdue Football and Basketball. He greatly enjoyed his younger years teaching at North Miami High School and tending to his small farm, raising sheep, corn and alfalfa. Larry left teaching and farming to wrangle a squad of farm implements salespeople who became close friends. In his later years he directed his attention to grading nationwide standardized tests.
Larry was never happier than when he was outdoors, hunting, fishing, observing wildlife or simply breathing the fresh air. He especially enjoyed his fly-fishing trips in the summers to Montana with his grandson, Trevor. When he was unable to enjoy the wilderness, he sated his appetite for it vicariously by reading. He subscribed to “Fur, Fish and Game” and his favorite book was “The Man-Eaters of Tsavo”.
Hall-Baker Funeral Home, Plainfield, is handling the arrangements. No memorial services are currently planned. In the springtime, an ash-scattering ceremony may be set up. Memorial contributions may be made to the Indiana DNR.
