John McCoy Obituary

John Calvin McCoy was born June 25, 1935, in Sturgis, Michigan to John C. Jr. and Mary Young McCoy of LaGrange, Indiana. He graduated from LaGrange High School and went to further his education at Purdue University before and after being drafted. John spent two years with the Army Construction Battalion at Fort Rucker, Alabama as an Army engineer building helicopter helipads. In 1957 John married the former Martha Sue Crumb (Marti), of Mishawaka, Indiana, who recently preceded him in death.

John is survived by his three children, Michael (the late Teresa) McCoy, Jody (Terri) McCoy, and Melissa (Thurman) Montgomery, all of central Indiana. John and Marti served as “parents” for three International Exchange Students through Youth for Understanding in the late 70’s and early 80’s, Kari Kivikoski and Kitta Kanos of Finland, and Johanna McPhail of Australia. John has six grandchildren, Jon McCoy, Spencer (Mercedes) McCoy, Sadie (Trevor) Morgan, Sammi (Andrew) Collier, Marcus (Ali) Montgomery and Mercedes (Anthony) Bradley as well as six great-grandchildren, Taylor, Atlas, Maddi, Silas, Sydney and Tula. John’s parents, a daughter-in-law (Teresa McCoy) and a grandson (Mitchell Montgomery), also preceded him in death.

John’s career touched Engineering, Construction, Project Management, Wastewater Treatment, and Computer Chip Manufacturing. He worked for Indiana State Highway Department, Hunt Paving, and Huber, Hunt & Nichols and was involved in several large projects around both Indianapolis and Cincinnati – names many know – Chase Tower, Delco, Eli Lilly, Proctor & Gamble and the I65/I70 Interloop.

A Celebration of Life is planned on October 20 for both John and Marti at The Center at Northview Christian Church, 623 N State Road 39, Danville, IN 46122 from 3pm to 7pm. The McCoys were both founders of McCloud Nature Park.
