Obituary

Janet Johnson Gibbs, 89, Danville, passed away on October 23, 2019. Memorial services will be on Saturday, November 2, 11:30 am at Baker Funeral Home, Danville, with visitation from 10 am until time of service. Burial at Danville South Cemetery. Contributions may be made to the Max Gibbs Memorial Scholarship, care of Hendricks County Community Foundation, 6319 East US Highway 36, Suite 211, Avon, IN 46123.

 

Janet Johnson Gibbs was born to Gerald Jack and Carrie Myers Johnson on April 15, 1930, North Washington St., Danville. She was a 1948 graduate of Pike High School and attended Butler University.

She met Glendon Max Gibbs at the Danville courthouse square and they married June 9, 1950, at the Danville Christian Church after Max graduated from Canterbury College. They lived in Markleville and Pittsboro due to Max’s teaching and coaching career before settling in Danville in 1958.

Janet worked at American Redball, Blanche Wean Accountants, and Old Farm Midstate Bank.

She was very involved in community organizations serving often as an officer including Tri Kappa Active and Alpha chapters, Browning Club, the Monday Afternoon Club, and Bridgearama. She attended Danville Christian Church for many years and was involved in the Ruth Circle fellowship. Janet was also a Cub Scout and Girl Scout leader, serving as a Girl Scout camp counselor at Camp Dellwood and Camp Koch as a young woman. She was an avid collector of Norman Rockwell plates and figurines, as well as many other collectibles. She had a large library of books and loved to travel. The Danville Alpha chapter continues with the poinsettia fundraiser that Janet assisted with bringing to the community.

Preceding her in death are her parents; husband, Max; sister, Susan Johnson Newby; and sons, Steven Max Gibbs and Thomas Allen Gibbs. Survivors include loving daughter, Jacqueline Gibbs; grandchildren, TJ Rhoades, Dusty (Breanna) Rhoades, Kendra (Brent) Castle and Casey Rhoades; great-grandchildren, Morgan Castle, Jackson and Terry Rhoades.
