Rosemond Eileen McNelley Smith of Plainfield, IN, passed away February 22, 2024, at the age of 90. Born July 9, 1933, at Coleman Hospital in Indianapolis to the late Oscar and Margaret Thomas McNelley, Eileen was a long-standing member of Plainfield First Baptist Church, where she was dedicated as a member at 9-days-old.
A 1952 graduate of Plainfield High School, Eileen was a twirler and drum major. Eileen was the Works Engineering secretary at Union Carbide, Speedway, IN, where she met Alvin L. Smith, whom she married June 22, 1958.
A founding member of the American Sewing Guild, she enjoyed several positions that allowed her to share her sewing talents with others. She was also a member of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra Women’s Committee, Today’s Homemakers, Naomi Rebekah Lodge #115, and the Plainfield Old Timers Club. An accomplished home economist, Eileen’s friends and family enjoyed her gifts from canned goods to croissants.
Funeral Services are Thursday, February 29, 2024, at 2:00 pm in Hall-Baker Funeral Home, Plainfield. Calling is from 1:00 – 2:00 pm, one hour prior to the service. Private burial will follow at Maple-Hill Cemetery. Donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the Naomi Rebekah Lodge #115, c/o Marcia Sutherlin, 705 S County Road 625 E, Filmore, IN 46128.
She was predeceased by her sisters and brothers-in-law: Eudell McNelley Wallin (Robert); Lura Helen McNelley Anders (Leroy); and Beulah Ethel McNelley Elkins (Clifford). Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Alvin Smith; daughter Lynaire White (Warner “Turk”); and grandson Warner “Riley” White III.
