Chere Marie (Brown) Smith passed away on January 21, 2023 at the age of 75. Chere fought long and hard in her battle with Dementia. She was born on August 1, 1947 to Clarence and Dorothy (Gard) Brown of Dubuque, Iowa, each of whom preceded her in death. She married Ray F. Smith November 20, 1965.
Chere is survived by her husband, Ray F. Smith of Plainfield, Indiana. Chere and Ray have 4 daughters, Carla (Darren) Hicks of Lafayette, Indiana, Renee (James) Hummel of Plainfield, Indiana, Cindy (Edward) Cicierko of Clayton, Indiana, and Lori (Joel) Moser of W. Lafayette, Indiana. She is survived by 13 grandchildren, Addison Hummel (fiancé, Caitlin Fromm), Raeann Cicierko, Anton (Kassidy) Hummel, Shelby (Joe) Yeaman, Casey Cicierko, Abbey Hummel, Maebel Moser, Emily Hicks, Andrew Cicierko, Ollie Moser (fiancé, Shannon Carr), Sherman Moser, Edith Moser, Ruth Moser, and 3 great-grandchildren, Lyla Manuel, Najee Hicks, and Sawyer Yeaman. Her sister, Vicki (Jim) Haberkorn of Avon, IN., her brother and sister-in-laws, John Smith of Epworth, IA., Pat (Donna) Smith of Dubuque, IA., Phyllis (Gary) Astgen of E. Dubuque, IL., Kathy (Wally) Link of Dyersville, IA., Rita Benter of Dubuque, IA., Darlene Sexton of Dubuque, IA., and Bill Brown of Solon, Iowa, also survive. She leaves behind many loving cousins, nieces, and nephews that were very dear to her.
Chere was a loving, caring wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Chere always wanted to ensure that every person that crossed her path was loved, safe, healthy, and happy. Throughout the years she opened her home welcoming everyone. She loved family and friends to visit, move in, or just come over and enjoy her good cooking.
Chere and Ray were married for 57 years. Chere and her family lived many places throughout the years starting in Dubuque, Iowa, then moving to Cottage Grove, Minnesota, Mason City, Iowa, Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, Omaha, Nebraska, Bolingbrook, Illinois, Clayton, Indiana, and Plainfield, Indiana, with her last residence at University Place in W. Lafayette, Indiana.
Chere was a long time member of St. Susanna Catholic Church where she enjoyed singing in the Choir and being a member of the Women’s Club. She enjoyed spending her free time cooking, traveling, volunteering, playing cards, shopping, and most of all spending time with family and friends.
Visitation will be held on Friday, January 27, 2023 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at St. Susanna Catholic Church in Plainfield. Mass will begin at 3:00 p.m. with entombment to follow at Maple Hill Cemetery Mausoleum. A Celebration of Life will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. in the St. Susanna Parish Center.
