Bonnie Lee Molloy, 82, passed away on Monday, March 20, 2023. She married R. Michael “Mike” Molloy in 1990. He is deceased (2010). Bonnie graduated from DePauw University with a bachelor’s degree, and Indiana State University with a master’s degree. She taught third grade in the Danville Community Schools for 28 years. During those 28 years, Bonnie was the State Coordinator for Young Astronauts, having the largest club in Indiana, and also received several notable teaching awards: NASA/Teacher in Space Program Applicant (1985), Hoosier Association of Science Teachers (1986), Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers (1994), IPALCO Golden Apple Award (1997 – honored for her “space tomato learning lab” project and leadership in classroom innovation), and National Science Teachers Association (honored for her outstanding contributions to teaching science). She was one of the first teachers in the state of Indiana to receive an endorsement for teaching Aerospace Science and was a member of the Indiana Aerospace Education Resource Network, where her programs received national and regional recognition.
Bonnie was a member of Charitable and Philanthropic groups including Tri-Kappa Sorority (1963), P.E.O. International, and was a volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House of Indiana. She was a member of Plainfield United Methodist Church. She enjoyed writing, particularly children’s science and nature-themed literature.
Bonnie is survived by son C. Lee Mitchell (Daphne), daughters Stephanie and Nancy, younger brother Wallace and grandchildren Savannah, Isabelle, James, and William who called her “Nana” as well as several step-children and step-grandchildren. A private interment with her children and their families will occur at a later time.
