Beverly Jane Etchason

Obituary

Beverly Jane Etchason (Smith) passed away, at home, during the evening of May 23, 2022, with her daughter and son-in-law by her side.

The first of three children, she was born in Indianapolis on November 4, 1943, to Chester, Jr. and Joan Winsted Etchason.  A 1961 graduate of Plainfield High School, Bev was a long time Plainfield resident and has a street in the town named after her.

She is survived by her daughters, Nancy (Steven) Hulsey and Susan (Mark) Wiser; grandson, Max Wiser; nieces Brook (Josh) Powell, Emily (Chason) Carter, and Rachel (Bradley) Adams; nephew Joseph Etchason; great-nieces Addison Adams and Sephrie Carter, and great-nephews Fischer and Beckett Powell and Wilder Carter.  Her brothers, Jeff and Greg Etchason, also survive.

Beverly started working at age fourteen, wrapping packages at Paul Harris Department Store in Plainfield.  She followed that up with jobs at the State Board of Health and Eli Lilly and Company.  She retired in 1998 after a long career with Blue Cross and Blue Shield.  Never one to sit still, she then worked in the Indiana Room of the Plainfield Guilford Township Public Library, for many years.

Bev loved music; she was a voracious reader, an accomplished seamstress and won several awards in cross stitching.  She learned to quilt, took a course on interior design, and had a beautiful yard and garden she tended.  She was an excellent cook and would share her goods with those she loved and worked with.  She explored genealogy and put together several trees for both sides of her family and friends.  Bev always enjoyed planning her high school reunions and retiree luncheons.  She could always be counted on to organize a great event!  She was instrumental in developing the database of Plainfield High School Graduates for the Alumni Association, keeping meticulous records of addresses and name changes.

Her love of animals was lifelong.  From the family's first dog, Waggles, to her many cats (Falstaff, Scamp, Truman, Nosey, Rosey, Wee, Runt, Macey and Ray) and dogs (Shadow, Chelsea and grand-dog Sonic,) she never saw an animal she didn’t love.

Per Bev’s request, please make memorial donations to the Girl Scouts of Central Indiana; Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana or your favorite charity.
