Obituary

Richard Raymond "Dick" Wright, 82, of Avon, Indiana passed away on October 22, 2022, in Avon. Born in Indianapolis on May 16, 1940, he was the son of Francis William and Helen (Reed) Wright. Dick was a 1958 graduate of Avon High School. He served proudly in the United States Air Force from 1961-1965, including eighteen months stationed at Karamursel Air Base in Turkey.

Dick followed in his mother's footsteps with a 27-year career at Lilly, retiring in 1993. After retirement, he enjoyed working part-time delivering lost luggage for the Indianapolis Airport. This was followed by a time as a delivery driver for the INCOLSA library network. For twenty years he volunteered with the Hendricks County Sheriff's Department.

He married Lois Ann Russell on December 16, 1960. Their nearly sixty-two-year marriage was a source of great joy. In 2011 they celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary with a much-enjoyed cruise to Alaska. Dick was a dedicated Christian, a member of the Church of Christ, who served for many years as a deacon and treasurer. He especially enjoyed the antics of the young children among the congregation where he attended.

Evidence of his always curious mind could be seen in Dick's favorite pastimes: his ham radio hobby, his many years working as a photographer at the Indy 500, and his prodigious woodworking skills. As a collector of dad jokes, his sense of humor was frequently on display. He passed on his love of ice hockey to all three of his children, though he was less successful with his fondness for classic country music.

Dick is survived by his widow Lois; his children, Sarah Wright of Plainfield, Matthew (Krista) Wright of Visalia, California, and Jennifer Wright of Indianapolis; as well as his beloved granddaughters Morgan Wright of Fresno, California, and Hannah Wright of Visalia, California. Also surviving are his sister Cindy (Don)-Sparks, of Mansfield, Texas;-and brothers William (Priscilla) Wright of Avon and Terry (Karen) Wright of Loogootee; as well brother-in-law Alan Russell and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held on Thursday October 27, 2022 from 4 p.m. 7 p.m. in Hall-Baker Funeral Home, Plainfield.  Funeral services will be held on Friday October 28, 2022 at 10 a.m. in the funeral home with burial to follow in Maple Hill Cemetery, Plainfield.

The Wright family wishes to thank Life's Journey of Avon and Paradigm Hospice for their excellent care of Dick during his final weeks.
