Obituary

Michael A. Slawski, 86 of Plainfield, peacefully passed away surrounded by family on July 10, 2026 following a brief illness. He was born on September 24, 1939 in Detroit, Michigan, to the late Catherine and Joseph Slawski.

Michael married Leandra Picknik on January 5, 1963 in Detroit Michigan, and she preceded him in death on July 15, 2015 after 52 years of marriage. Survivors include his five daughters, Linda, Julia, Sharon, Mary, Elaine; 8 grandchildren, Jamie, Michael, Laura, Rachel, Jessica, Patrick, Justin, Kasia; a great granddaughter, Olivia; and his beloved golden retriever, Priscilla.

He was the fifth child of eight, with three brothers and four sisters. Living most of his life in Michigan, he had a love for the outdoors. As a child, he grew up hunting and fishing with his father and brothers. This eventually evolved into hunting with his brothers and nephews. He taught all of his girls to fish, and as much has he loved to fish, he took even greater enjoyment in watching and helping his girls land a fish.

After graduating high school, he went to night school and developed a background in electronics. He spent his career first working at Burroughs Corporation, where he worked on early integrated circuits. He worked briefly at Chrysler Corporation and then moved on to Ford Motor Company where he spent over twenty plus years working as an electrical engineer. Michael and Leandra were proud that they were able to provide a college education for all five daughters.

Michael is an U.S. Army veteran. He served from November 1959 to February 1962. He became certified and served as a lifeguard for the officer’s pool on the Army base. Many years later he was honored for his service as a participant of the Honor Flight program.

He spent the last eight years in Plainfield. Here he enjoyed going to the pool to water walk, exercise classes, bike rides, and long walks with his golden retriever Priscilla. He was a great story teller and spent many hours entertaining his neighbors while they shared his front porch rockers with him and Priscilla. He took pleasure in eating out, playing Sequence, listening to music especially polkas, and most recently spending time with his volunteer friend Scott.

A memorial mass will be held in the near future at St. Susanna Catholic Church, Plainfield. Inurnment will be at a later date in Calvary Cemetery 11025 Lafayette Street Cheboygan, MI 49721.
