John Walter Culley, age 81, of Clayton, passed away surrounded by the love of his family and community. He was born on September 9, 1944, in Indianapolis to the late Victor and Inez Custard Culley. John was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, veteran, and friend whose kindness and dedication touched many lives.
He is survived by his loving wife, Emma “Ruth” Culley; his children, Michael Culley and wife Nicole Culley, and Michelle Ross; and his cherished grandchildren, Samantha Powell and husband Garrit Powell, Christopher Case, Savannah Ross, Madison Ross, Shelby Ross, and Kendall Culley. He also leaves behind three beloved great-grandchildren.
John proudly served his country as a member of the National Guard. He retired in 1993 from his career at Eli Lilly’s. He was a 35-year member of Clayton Christian Church, where he built lasting friendships and faithfully served his community. John also dedicated many years volunteering at the Mill Creek Support Center Food Bank and proudly served as a member of the Clayton Town Board.
John enjoyed life’s simple pleasures and could often be found hunting, fishing, watching NASCAR races, or cheering on his favorite football teams. More than anything, he loved spending time with his family and helping others whenever he could.
John will be remembered for his servant’s heart, his loyalty to his family and community, and the lasting impact he made on those who knew and loved him. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday May 20, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Clayton Christian Church 5110 IN-39 Clayton, Indiana 46118. Funeral services will follow at 3 p.m. in the church with Rev. Gary Black Officiating. Burial will follow in Clayton Cemetery.
