Obituary

James Clair May, beloved husband and devoted family man passed away on January 16, 2016 at home peacefully with his family by his side.  Jim was born and raised in Richmond, Illinois on December 15, 1929 to Charles and Julia May.  He graduated in 1947 from Richmond Burton Community High School where he was very involved in many school activities some of which included Student Class Council President and Captain of the 1946 undefeated Southern Regional Conference Champion "Raiders" seven man Football Team.  Jim attended the University of Illinois, where he graduated in 1951 with a degree in Architecture.  After college Jim enlisted in the U. S. Air Force.  While as a 2nd Lieutenant stationed in Minnesota, he met his wife, Mary E. Bruce.  They joined in marriage in January of 1953 and were married for 55 years before Mary passed in 2008.  Jim and his family moved to Plainfield in 1956 where he started work with Huber, Hunt and Nichols.  Together they raised a family of seven children where he and his family were actively involved with Saint Susanna Catholic Church and Plainfield Elks Club.  Jim's successful career at HHN started with the construction of Memorial Stadium at I. U.  He went on to become the President of Huber, Hunt and Nichols, later known as the Hunt Construction Group in 1976.  During his career he oversaw the construction of some of the countries most well-known structures like, Pittsburg's Three Rivers Stadium, Cincinnati's River Front Stadium, New Orleans' Superdome, Lexington's Rupp Arena.  Locally, he was involved in the construction of Market Square Arena, AUL Building, Bank One Tower, City County Building, and the Hoosier Dome.  Jim was also a former President of the Associated General Contractors of Indiana.  Jim later moved on to form May and Associates where he was involved with building the Indiana Government Center in Indianapolis.  He spent several years with F. A. Wilhelm Construction before retiring 1996.  Always a business man and golf enthusiast, he went on to join HG Properties and built Twin Bridges Golf Course in Danville, IN. and later went on to manage the golf course at his alma mater, the University of Illinois.  Although Jim was a very successful career man, nothing was more important to him than his family.  Jim was preceded in death by his loving wife Mary E. May, son and daughter-in-law Bruce and Marlana May, parents Charles and Julia May, brothers Charles, Robert and Richie May.  Survivors include:  sister Mary Anne (Larry Gaylord), sisters-in-law Margaret and Maxine May, son Robert (America) May, daughter Linda (Jim) Rinehart, son Douglas (Rebecca) May, daughter Barbara (Alan) Toliver, daughter Patricia (Jeffery) Smeathers, son Thomas May.  Grandchildren:  Stephanie (John) Marshall, Wyatt and Elliott May, Robert and Gloria May, James (Shannon) Rinehart, Darcy Rinehart, Mitch Rinehart, Ryan (Shawna) May, Stuart Toliver, Michelle Toliver, Anne (Glenn) Toliver-Pratt, Grant Toliver, Jason Smeathers, Andrew Smeathers, and Madison Smeathers.  Great grandchildren:  Matthew, Alyssa Isabella, Aleene, James, Emery, and Sarah.  A funeral mass will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, January 22, 2016 in St. Susanna Catholic Church with entombment to follow in Maple Hill Cemetery Mausoleum.  Calling will be from 4:00-8:00 pm on Thursday, January 21, 2016 in the Church.  Memorials in Jim's honor may be made to the St. Susanna Catholic Church Choir 1210 E Main St. Plainfield, IN  46168.  Hall-Baker Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.  Online condolences may be made at www.bakerfuneralservice.com
