James M. Collins, Jr., 83 of Plainfield, passed away on August 10, 2026 at home surrounded by his family. He was born on February 06, 1943 in Detroit, Michigan, to the late Marie E. (Hurley) and James M. Collins, Sr. Jim was a U. S. Army veteran and served 22 months in Vietnam. He married Shirley E. Kneile on September 23, 1972 in Elkhart, Indiana.
After leaving the Army and moving to Speedway, Jim worked in many different industries including Air Traffic Control, Car Wash, Home Security, and finally working in Federal Security for many years before his retirement. He was a member of St. Susanna Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Speedway American Legion Post #500 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Jim enjoyed watching his grandchildren’s sports, spending time in different faith-based groups, cheering on his Hoosiers and Pacers, and playing card and board games with his family.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Shirley E. Collins of Plainfield; children, James Matthew Collins (Heidi) of Gilbert, AZ., Anne Marie Collins of Camby, Jennifer Leigh Collins of Mooresville; and 5 grandchildren, Jack, Collin, and Grace Anderson, Michael and Alison Collins. He was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Mary Ellen Walberer, Patricia VanDerworp, William P. Collins and Kathleen Feeny.
A memorial mass will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, August 22, 2026 at St. Susanna Catholic Church, Plainfield, with visitation from 11:00 am until the service time. Inurnment with Military Honors will follow the service at Maple Hill Cemetery Columbarium, Plainfield. Hall-Baker Funeral Home, Plainfield, is handling the arrangements. Contributions may be made to the Benedict Inn Retreat and Conference Center 1402 Southern Avenue Beech Grove, IN 46107 or St. Susanna Catholic Church 1210 E Main St Plainfield, IN 46168.
