Obituary

Chuck was born November 12, 1946 in Terre Haute, Indiana to Charles L. Crowther, Sr. and Mary Jeffries Hirsch Crowther. He passed away on August 7, 2025 at the age of 78.

He attended Otter Creek School in North Terre Haute and graduated from Garfield High School, in Terre Haute, in May, 1964. Then in November, 1964 he enlisted in the United States Navy. After basic training, he was assigned to the USS King DLG-10, a guided missile destroyer, home ported in San Diego, California. During 1965, 1966 and 1967, the USS King patrolled the waters of the Tonkin Gulf, off the coast of North Vietnam.

During that period, the crew of the USS King was credited with the rescue of six U.S. pilots. Chuck was proud of his military service.

In 1968, he was employed at Public Service Indiana, in Plainfield, Indiana (now Duke Energy) and retired as a System Operator in 1994, after 26 years. In 1989 Chuck and his wife, Melodie, purchased property in rural Putnam County and built their dream home. Many wonderful times were spent at "Camp Crowther" with their children, nieces, nephews, friends and their three dogs. He enjoyed gardening, cooking, fishing, arrowhead hunting, panning for gold and metal detecting.

He was a member of the Mooresville American Legion, the Plainfield Elks, the Plainfield Eagles, and the Putnam County Coin Club in Greencastle.

Chuck was preceded in death by his parents and Chuck and Melodie's three beloved dogs; Buster, Wrinkles and Growley.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Melodie Wilcox Crowther, sons; Michael Crowther (Roxane) and James Crowther, from Monrovia. He is also survived by a brother, Joseph Hirsch of Indianapolis, and two cats, Miss Kitty and Daisy.

If anyone is inclined to make a contribution in Chuck's honor, it may be sent to the Putnam County Humane Society - 4700 E. SR 240, Greencastle, IN 46135, or the animal rescue of your choice.

The family wishes to thank the extraordinary caregivers at Mill Pond Health Campus in Greencastle and Life's Journey Hospice of Indianapolis for their exemplary care, above and beyond, of Charles and his family during this journey. There are no words to thank them enough.
