Alvin L. Smith of Plainfield, IN, passed away May 28, 2024, at the age of 90. He was born April 4, 1934, at home in rural Danville, IN, to the late Roy and Mae (Bray) Smith.
A 1952 graduate of Danville High School, Al served in the US Army, stationed to Chicago 5th Army Headquarters, where he developed a knack for computer technology. He then studied computer technology at Purdue University Extension, Indianapolis, becoming a certified systems professional. Al started his career at Union Carbide Corporation, Speedway, where he met R. Eileen McNelley of Plainfield. They married June 22, 1958.
In 1961, Al installed the first computer for the UCC cryogenic business in Speedway, IN, and oversaw the conversion. After 33 years, he retired as senior systems analyst and applications team supervisor. He continued his career at AUL Insurance as QA analyst and disaster recovery coordinator, where he became an early information security specialist. Finally, he worked as a network security systems analyst for the Reception Diagnostic Center at the Plainfield Correctional Facility, before truly retiring at age 73.
Al was a member of the First Baptist Church of Plainfield. He and Eileen enjoyed traveling and camping, especially with friends in the Good Sam Club; Al was a past president of the local club, the Lazy Sam. At home, Al liked being outside gardening, tinkering with his Fords, and cheering for Purdue.
Funeral services will be Monday June 3, 2024, at 2:00 pm in Hall-Baker Funeral Home, Plainfield with Rev. Dusty Cowell officiating. Calling is from 1:00 – 2:00 pm, one hour prior to the service. Private burial will follow in Maple Hill Cemetery, Plainfield.

He was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, R. Eileen McNelly Smith. Survivors include his daughter Lynaire White (Warner "Turk"); sister Barbara Eldrige (Jim); and grandson Warner "Riley" White III
