Michael E. Hamlin, 64 of Plainfield, passed away December 16, 2018. Born May 22, 1954 in Kendallville, Indiana, he was the son of Atlee Eugene and Maxine Friskney Hamlin. He married Mary Boesch in March of 1981. Survivors include his wife, Mary Hamlin; father, Atlee Hamlin; sons, Scott (Meghan) Hamlin, Ben Hamlin; daughter, Julie (Mike) Lee; brothers, Craig (Cheryl) Hamlin, Roger Hamlin, Rich (Dawn) Hamlin; sister, Debbie (George) Hall and 4 grandchildren, Beckett and Macklin Hamlin, Kendall and Hunt Lee. His mother, Maxine, preceded him in death.
Mike’s favorite moments were those spent with family, especially in recent years with his four grandkids. Mike was the kids’ favorite squirt gun target; he loved chasing them around the yard, and was always their favorite shoulder to nap on. He loved spending time showing the grandkids his vegetable garden and was master chef to countless unforgettable family meals.
Mike and Mary were avid travelers, hiking several of the US National Parks as well as the Indiana State Parks. On Sundays, Mike could usually be found cheering on the Colts as a season ticket holder. This was one of his favorite ways to spend time with his wife and kids.
During his time at Avon High School, Mike played a significant role in the growth of both the academic and athletic departments. Mike started the Varsity Girls Cross Country team at Avon High School, and spent several years as the head coach of both the Girls and Boys Cross Country and Track programs. He was also a football and wrestling coach early in his career at Avon.
Academically, the math department was the beneficiary of Mike’s leadership for 32 years. In this time he started the Advanced Placement Calculus Program, was the coach and leader for the Academic Super Bowl team, and spent countless hours outside of the classroom helping students prepare for collegiate-level math. More than anything, Mike loved helping kids succeed; a gift he continued to give as a math tutor to students until the day he died.
