Iris Carleen (Huffman) Rogers

April 24, 1927 ~ December 3, 2017 (age 90) 90 Years Old

Iris Carleen Rogers, 90, of Greenwood, passed away December 3, 2017 at Greenwood Village.  Born April 24, 1927 in Ladoga, she was the daughter of Gemima Elizabeth Meltabarger and Cecil Norval Huffman, Sr.  She grew up on the farm and always loved the “country life.” She loved animals and was devoted to her cats, dogs and chickens.  She was briefly married to Zackary Rogers on May 23, 1977, but lived most of her life as a single, Christian woman.  She was very involved in the activities of her single’s group at Calvary Tabernacle in Indianapolis, of which she was a long-time member. Her faith in Christ was the dominating characteristic of her life.  In a recent note, she wrote “I decided many years ago to be a follower of Jesus Christ and that has been my focus ever since and forever.  I do not want anything to cross my path that would change that.” She will be missed for her kind and compassionate spirit, one that emanated directly from her faith.

Carleen loved her family, her brothers, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews. She understood the importance of family and the stability, inspiration and richness that comes from a well-known heritage.  In her later years, she spent much of her time researching her family’s roots and sharing this information with other interested family members.  She also enjoyed going to Christy’s auction in Indianapolis and looking for a great bargain.

Most of her working life was spent at the Veteran’s Administration as a clerk and administrative assistant.  However, she also worked for the Federal Housing Authority, Hibben, Hollweg and Company (Indianapolis dry goods store), Woolworth Five and Dime in Crawfordsville, and the Ladoga Canning Company. She retired from the Veteran’s Administration in 1992, and subsequently worked part time for Indiana Bible College, a school affiliated with Calvary Tabernacle.

Survivors include her brother, Don David (Phyllis) Huffman of Danville; nieces, Paulette (Huffman) Walker, Annette (Huffman) Hartzell, Carol Sue Huffman, Sheryl Huffman, Beverly Huffman, Melissa Huffman, Monica Huffman, Cathy Huffman, Diana Huffman and one nephew, David A. Huffman; great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.  Her parents and brothers, Cecil Huffman, Jr. and Philip Huffman, preceded her in death.  Services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 9, 2017 in Baker Funeral Home, Danville, with burial to follow in Maple Hill Cemetery, Plainfield.  Calling will be from 11:00 a.m. until the service in the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Calvary Tabernacle Church 902 Fletcher Avenue Indpls In 46203 or Salvation Army Harbour Lights 2400 N Tibbs Ave Indpls 46222.
