Dewey A. Hauser

November 25, 1919 ~ August 2, 2017 (age 97) 97 Years Old

Dewey A. Hauser, 97, passed away on Wednesday, August 2.  Born in Coal City, Indiana he was one of 8 children raised in the farming communities of Owen County. After high school graduation, he worked in a dairy in Illinois, then returned to Southern Indiana and began working bridge construction until he entered the US Army in 1942.  He served 3 1/2 years in the Pacific Theatre, serving in the invasions of the Leyte in the Philippines and the invasion of Okinawa. He earned a Bronze Star with V attachment and the Combat Infantry Badge among other decorations.  When the war ended, he returned to the bridge construction industry as General Superintendent for the R.L.Schutt Company where he was responsible for the construction of 157 structures in the state, including the 38th Street Bridge over the White River and numerous bridges in the Indianapolis inner loop.  The inner loop bridges included the I-65 Bridge at 11th St.  In 1948 he met and married his wife of 67 years, Evelyn who passed away in 2015.  They built a home in Plainfield in 1955, and were active members of the Plainfield Christian Church. Dewey served as a trustee for the church during construction of the new buildings on Dan Jones Road. Dewey’s hobbies were playing golf and quail hunting.  He was a member of the American Legion, lodge 141, the Plainfield Masonic Lodge, the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, and the Murat Shrine.  He was a past member of the Plainfield Elks Club and served on the Plainfield Police Commission.  He was named a Sagamore of the Wabash by the Governor in 1972.  Survivors include two sons, Lee (Claudia) Hauser of Fort Myers, Florida, and Mark (Ann) Hauser of Indianapolis, IN, four grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by a sister, Marjorie Main of Plainfield and Dwight Hauser of Spencer, IN.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Plainfield Christian Church 800 North Dan Jones Road Plainfield, Indiana 46168   Calling will be at Hall-Baker Funeral Home in Plainfield on Tuesday, August 8 from 10 am until noon, with services immediately following.
