JAMES M. COLE

Beloved husband, Uncle, Brother-in-law, Cousin and Friend

James M. Cole passed away at his home in Plainfield,Indiana, on Monday, September 26, 2016 at 6:00 am. He is survived by his wife Catherine Louise Cole, his two nieces Judith Bowman Good of San Rafael, California and Linda Roth Crotchett of Jerseyville, Ill., brother-in-law of Barbara and David Sinders of Plainfield, Ind.,William Miller,of Terre Haute, Ind. and Mary Rose Miller of Indianapolis, Ind. as well as many other extended family members . He is preceded in death by his father J.A. Cole, mother Lucy Cole, and sisters Mary Lou Bowman and Elizabeth Roth and brother-in-law Denzel Miller. Jim was a gentleman, loved by all who knew him and will be sadly missed.

James M. Cole was born on the family farm in Atwater, II. on June 12,1918, He graduated from Litchfield High School in 1938, and in 1941, two weeks after Pearl Harbor, accepted a position at the Naval Torpedo Station in Alexandria, Virginia as a draftsman. There is where he met and married Louise Miller on June 1,1945, a union that has lasted over 71years.

A graduate of Bradley University in Peoria, II. Jim's career flourished as he participated in numerous Engineering projects including "Operation Greenhouse", (testing of the first Atom Bomb) in the Marshall Islands, and the design and development of the Vanguard Satellite. He worked at the Naval Research Lab for many years later serving in the U. S. Department of Commerce and then in the Department of Defense with an office at the Pentagon.  He was on active duty   before the end of WWII  and    then
served in the U.S. Naval Reserve retiring in 1992 as a Lt. Commander. He retired after SO years of government  service  but  continued to  serve as  a Consultant working with his protege Dr. Peter Leitner.

He and his wife lived in Annandale, Virginia throughout his career, until retiring to their home in Plainfield, Indiana. He was a member of the Springfield Christian Church in Virginia and served on the

Board of Trustees   of the   Community College.   He was a  member  of  the  Naval Officer's  Club at  Ft.

Meyer, Va. And the National Herb Society.

Visitation at the Hall- Baker Funeral Home in Plainfield, Indiana on Wednesday, September 28, 2016 from 5 to 7 pm.

 Burial will be in Bethel Ridge Cemetery in Atwater, II.
