Harry B. Newby

March 31, 1925 ~ May 29, 2016 (age 91) 91 Years Old

Harry B. Newby, passed on May 29, 2016, aged 91, of Naperville, Illinois, and previously of The Villages, Florida and Plainfield, Indiana.  Harry graduated from Ben Davis High School and Butler University in Indianapolis, in between which he served his country during World War II from 1943-46 in the Army Air Corps, rising to the rank of Sergeant.  He was married to Gloria Lee (nee’ Haffner) Newby for 57 years, who predeceased him in 2009.  He was employed in the insurance industry, retiring in 1991.  The job that he enjoyed most was as Director of Ticket Sales – May for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway from 1959 until the 1980’s.  His principal vocation, however, was as a father, not only to his son, David (Diana), but as a father figure to scores of boys who came under his mentorship in Boy Scouts, the Order of DeMolay, Y-Indian Guides, and countless volunteer positions.  He was previously a member of Zion Evangelical United Church of Christ in Indianapolis and Northlake Presbyterian Church in The Villages.  Harry was a Freemason for 70 years, a member of the Scottish Rite, and honored as a Kentucky Colonel.  He is survived and will be sorely missed by his son and daughter-in-law, his adored granddaughters, Andrea and Meredith, his treasured nieces, Carol (Denny) Cook and Kathy (Dale) Kunkel and his grand and great nieces and nephews.  Services will be on June 3, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Hall-Baker Funeral Home, 339 E. Main St., Plainfield, Indiana, with visitation commencing at 10:00 a.m.  Interment will be at Maple Hill Cemetery following the service.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Knox Presbyterian Church, 1105 Catalpa Lane, Naperville, IL  60540.
